When Michael was less than a year old, his Lollie created a personalized mailbox just for him. Inside were colorful letters from family members, friends, Santa, the Easter Bunny, and other special people in his life.

Before he could even walk, Michael would crawl to his mailbox, pull out each letter, and wait for someone to read it to him. It quickly became one of his most treasured possessions.

Then, at just 15 months old, Michael was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

After a frightening trip to the pediatrician, an emergency room visit, and four days in the Pediatric ICU, Michael returned home with his parents. They were relieved, exhausted, and overwhelmed by everything they had been asked to learn in such a short amount of time.

Michael walked into the house and went straight to his mailbox.

In that moment, the fear and trauma were replaced by something beautifully familiar: joy, innocence, and the knowledge that he was deeply loved.

A NOTE FROM LOLLIE

Our oldest son loved getting the mail when he was growing up. Opening and shutting the mailbox as a toddler to running out and getting the mail as he grew older. It is a sweet memory that we hold dear to our hearts.

When our son had his son, Michael Gray, I made him his own mailbox for Christmas. It was a personalized mailbox with colorful customized letters. Michael was not even a year old and he would crawl over to it and pull out every letter for me to read to him. Each letter had a personal message to him from family members, friends, Santa the Easter Bunny and more.

Michael was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 6 months later. After a frightening morning to the pediatrician and ER he was admitted to the Pediatric ICU. He was one sick little boy. While Michael was fighting for his life, his parents were having to learn how to keep him alive. It was the hardest week of our lives. Michael made a full recovery and was discharged 4 days later

Our son and his wife left the hospital scared and overwhelmed. So much for them to endure, process, accept and learn in such a short amount of time. When they came home and walked into the house, Michael went straight to his mailbox. All the trauma that that little boy went through was now behind him. He was ready to play.

That was when “Michael’s Mail” came to life! That moment in time where innocence and joy takes over trauma and diagnosis. Where the beauty of life surpasses all else.
